Shinrin-Yoku: Forest Bathing Experience



Shinrin-yoku (森林浴), which literally translates to ‘forest bath,’ is the Japanese practice of ‘bathing’ oneself in nature with the intention of receiving therapeutic benefits. Beginning in Japan in the 1980s (the word, itself, was coined by the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in 1982), the practice of shinrin-yoku has since spread widely across the planet — this is the first guided tour operating in Slovenia that teach the benefits of forest therapy.

Taking a walk in natural green spaces not only can really help clear your head, but in a recent Japanese study, researchers found those persons who were exposed to forest settings had greatly improved cortisol (stress) levels, pulse rates, blood pressure, and parasympathetic nerve activity levels versus those who were exposed to urban settings. Science has confirmed the evidence on the positive effects of contact with nature on our physical, emotional and mental well-being.

The “Forest Bathing”concept is inspired by the Japanese practice of Shin-rin-Yoku, which translates to “taking in the forest atmosphere.” It involves walking — quietly, slowly and deliberately — in a forest, and taking in the sounds, scents, colours, forms and the vibe of nature.


We will absorb the forest’s healing ambience. Key to the experience is the inhalation of wood essential oils, similar to natural aromatherapy, but visual, auditory, and other sensory stimuli are also important.

The result? A host of health benefits, including a boosted immune system, an increase in cancer-battling proteins, and improved blood pressure, among others. Studies have also found psychological benefits, with forest bathers seeing significant increases in positive feelings and decreases in negative feelings. While forests lend themselves innately to quiet reflection, you do not need to spend your time there meditating or consciously relaxing—the forest will take care of that itself, bestowing its rewards through sight, sound, smell, and touch.
